Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice, the Maui-born shave-ice chain, is set to cool down Old Sacramento with its first Sacramento shop opening this week. A soft opening is slated for Friday, May 21, followed by a grand opening on Sunday, May 23. The new storefront will take over a Second Street space near the riverfront and serve Ululani’s signature fluffy shave ice with fruit-forward syrups. Owners say they are gearing up for big crowds and long lines similar to those at other mainland locations.
As reported by The Sacramento Bee, the Old Sacramento shop at 1013 Second Street will be run by Stockton natives and married couple Tammy Nguyen and Johnny Dang, who opened the brand’s Stockton location in 2023. The Bee also notes that this will be Ululani’s fifth California location and its 17th nationwide. Nguyen told the paper the district "reminded us of Lahaina in Hawaii," and the owners said they hoped to "bring a piece of Maui" to Sacramento.
From Stockton to Old Sacramento
The chain's official locations page lists Stockton at 2130 Pacific Ave and marks Sacramento's 1013 2nd St. as "coming soon," confirming the local move. Ululani's locations page maps the brand's mainland footprint across California and other states. A feature on the Bay Area rollout noted that the Stockton opening drew long lines after its grand opening. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on that early demand.
Menu and What to Order
Ululani's Sacramento menu will feature more than 50 syrups made with pure cane sugar and fruit purees, and the chain even states "All syrups are GLUTEN FREE!" Signature combos include Sunset Beach (passion orange, mango and guava) and No Ka Oi (mango, coconut and passion fruit), with add-ons like snow cap and fresh mochi available. Ululani co-founder David Yamashiro told The Sacramento Bee that reaction to the Sacramento opening has been unusually enthusiastic, saying, "The amount of feedback was tremendous, definitely way more than we've had in any of our other openings." The franchise's early buzz means the owners are bracing for lines and a busy first weekend, and staff say they'll try to keep service moving fast. As with other recent Ululani openings, expect peak waits in the early evening and on weekend afternoons.
Old Sacramento's mix of tourists and riverfront foot traffic makes the timing logical for the chain's arrival, and the new shop adds a summery treat to the district's lineup. If you're planning to go opening weekend, consider visiting earlier in the day for shorter waits. We'll update coverage if the owners announce special promotions or timed events around the grand opening.
