Two people are dead after a late-night house fire tore through a home near China Grove in Rowan County on Saturday, authorities said. Firefighters were dispatched to the 200 block of Saw Road shortly before midnight and arrived to find the residence already heavily engulfed in flames. The Rowan County Fire Marshal confirmed the two fatalities and said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
According to WCNC, emergency crews reached the scene at about 11:45 p.m., with deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office assisting firefighters. WCNC's report, by Diamond Carroll, notes that investigators stayed on site into the early morning hours as they secured the area and gathered evidence from the charred structure.
Investigation underway
The Rowan County Fire Division typically leads origin-and-cause investigations in serious fire incidents, and officials say that kind of probe is underway here. A recent China Grove blaze in March, a three-alarm fire that collapsed a roof and sent two firefighters to the hospital, illustrates how quickly structure fires can escalate, according to Hoodline. County officials have not yet released additional information about the victims or what might have sparked this latest fire.
What officials say
Authorities have not publicly identified the two people who were killed, and the cause of the fire remains under review. As reported by WCNC, the Rowan County Fire Marshal and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office are jointly leading the investigation and remained at the scene as firefighters wrapped up suppression efforts and investigators continued collecting evidence. Officials are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
The deadly blaze has left neighbors and first responders rattled, and local agencies say they will share more details as they are confirmed. Hoodline will update this story if county officials release additional information.
