A man in his 30s was slashed outside the 34th Street–Herald Square subway entrance near 35th Street and Sixth Avenue early Saturday morning, turning a busy Midtown corner into an overnight crime scene. Commuters scattered, the sidewalk was left streaked with blood, and police say the attacker took off before officers arrived. Detectives are now working the area, knocking on doors and pulling video to figure out who did it.
Where And What Happened
According to the New York Post, the victim is 33 years old and suffered a deep cut to his left arm before being taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The Post published photos showing blood on the pavement and yellow tape circling the subway stairwell. Local radio outlet 1010 WINS reported that the confrontation started on a platform at the 34th St–Herald Sq station around midnight, then spilled up onto the street.
Police Search And Footage
Investigators have been circulating both surveillance clips and cellphone video as they look for the person responsible. Local TV crews captured footage at the scene, and officers say they are pulling images from cameras mounted on nearby storefronts. CBS New York shared video of a person of interest and relayed police requests for anyone with tips or additional footage to come forward.
Victim Cooperation And Investigation Status
The New York Post also reports that the victim has so far declined to cooperate with detectives, a wrinkle investigators say is slowing down the early phase of the case. Police have not announced any arrests and are still canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and additional video. Officials have not released a detailed description of the suspect beyond the images that detectives are already circulating.
Why This Matters In Midtown
The Herald Square slashing lands on top of a recent run of violent incidents in Midtown, including a deadly stabbing near Times Square earlier this week that led to extra patrols in the area. That high-profile killing and other recent cases have pushed transit safety back onto the to-do list for local elected officials and the NYPD. FOX 5 New York covered the Times Square homicide and the stepped-up police presence that followed.
How To Help
Anyone with photos, video or information about the Herald Square attack is asked to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑577‑TIPS or submit an anonymous tip through the Crime Stoppers website or mobile app. The program takes tips without collecting names and may offer a reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment, according to Crime Stoppers.
Detectives from the Midtown South unit say the investigation remains open and that they will continue to review any footage that comes in. Anyone who witnessed the assault or captured it on video is urged to call Crime Stoppers or reach out directly to the Midtown South Detective Squad.
