A late-night walk in San Diego’s Midway District turned brutal today when a 37-year-old man was struck in a hit-and-run and left fighting for his life in the street.
The crash happened around 12:40 AM at Camino del Rio West and Kurtz Street. Medics rushed the man to a hospital, where doctors treated him for a brain bleed and a fractured pelvis. Police said his injuries were life-threatening.
According to the Times of San Diego, investigators said the victim was walking west near the south crosswalk when an unknown vehicle heading south on Camino del Rio West drove through the intersection and hit him. The driver took off immediately and had not been found as of Friday, and officers still had no description of the vehicle or the suspect.
Authorities urged anyone who saw anything to call the San Diego Police Department or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. The San Diego Crime Stoppers website details how to submit anonymous tips online and notes that callers could be eligible for a reward if their information leads to an arrest.
Intersection Has A Troubling Pedestrian Crash Record
The intersection where the man was hit already has a grim reputation. The Midway area has logged multiple pedestrian collisions in recent years, including a deadly incident that sounded all too familiar: a fatal 2024 hit-and-run at the same intersection.
City planning documents back up neighborhood concerns, mapping Kurtz Street and Camino del Rio West among known pedestrian-crash hot spots and calling for multimodal safety upgrades along the corridor, according to the City of San Diego mobility report.
Investigators are asking neighbors, late-night workers and drivers who were in the area around midnight to review any surveillance or dash-cam footage for possible clues. Anyone who spots something related to the crash is urged to contact SDPD or the anonymous tip line. The Traffic Division continues to investigate while the victim remains hospitalized in serious condition.
