A 30-year-old man is behind bars and a 15-year-old girl from Lehi, Utah, is back with her family after Maricopa County detectives tracked her to a Litchfield Park neighborhood last week. Investigators with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office say they identified the teen during a targeted surveillance operation, then moved in and safely recovered her. She is now receiving care from relatives and medical personnel after several tense days of leads and tips scattered across the West Valley.

Deputies initially responded to a welfare check on April 28 after the girl’s mother reported her missing, according to ABC15. Detectives later watched a man and a juvenile leave a home, confirmed the girl’s identity, and detained the suspect, who investigators identified as 30-year-old Armando Sanchez-Lopez.

As reported by AZFamily, the teen had left Lehi City on April 24 and was dropped off around 9:30 p.m. near Stella Lane, close to Dysart Road and Maryland Avenue. The acquaintance who dropped her off told investigators that when he tried to follow, an unknown man confronted him and pointed a rifle at him. In the days that followed, that acquaintance said he received messages from the girl saying she needed help and was being held against her will. A tip on April 29 sent detectives back to the Stella Lane area, where they saw the same man and teen leaving a house and took Sanchez-Lopez into custody.

Charges and past allegations

According to ABC15, Sanchez-Lopez was booked into the Maricopa County jail on multiple felony counts that local authorities describe as sexual assault, sexual conduct with a minor, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and failure to comply with a court order. ABC15 reports that investigators say Sanchez-Lopez has previously faced several sex-related accusations involving multiple alleged victims, and MCSO Special Victims detectives are now reviewing that history along with new evidence. Prosecutors have not released additional court documents beyond the initial booking information.

Detectives' statement and next steps

“Thanks to the persistence and coordination of our detectives, this juvenile was safely located and recovered,” MCSO Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said in a statement, as quoted by AZFamily. Detectives are asking anyone who may have had contact with Sanchez-Lopez, or who has information related to this case, to reach out to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The agency lists general contact numbers and victim resources on its website, and the public can call 602-876-1000 for tips and media inquiries.

Officials say Sanchez-Lopez remains in custody while the investigation continues and MCSO Special Victims detectives review prior reports and other evidence. Authorities have not released additional information about the teen’s medical condition or a possible motive as they continue building the case. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the sheriff’s office tip line or submit information through the agency’s online reporting system.
