Mayor Helena Moreno and a lineup of city leaders have kicked off a fast-track push to overhaul Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Stadium in Algiers, pulling together public dollars, private support and leftover turf so the field is ready for play by the fall season. The effort is pitched as a neighborhood partnership that focuses on safety, youth access and keeping the stadium in regular use for local high school and after-school athletics.
According to WGNO, InspireNOLA has pledged $500,000 toward the project, and Councilmember Freddie King III has put up an initial $100,000 in seed funding. City officials say the municipal contribution will include in-kind perimeter turf left over from Super Bowl LIX. Speaking at the announcement, Moreno framed the whole push around younger athletes and community use, telling families and students, "We're here to serve you." Organizers say the goal is to move quickly so school schedules and game calendars see as little disruption as possible.
What's in the plan
The city’s 2025–2029 Capital Improvement Plan already flags the Morris F.X. Jeff Complex for a master plan and includes a line item for citywide turf-field replacements, according to the City of New Orleans. Those funding priorities suggest the project will center on swapping out the worn playing surface and reinforcing the perimeter areas that most affect safety and daily field use.
Home field for local high schools
The stadium will remain home turf for both Edna Karr and L.B. Landry high schools, keeping a shared, central venue for varsity matchups and neighborhood events. Crescent City Sports consistently lists Edna Karr games at Morris F.X. Jeff Stadium, and team materials continue to identify it as L.B. Landry’s home field as well.
Timeline and next steps
Officials expect the renovated field to be ready by August 1, 2026, with early work focused on turf and perimeter fixes, according to WGNO. The project lines up with Moreno’s early priorities for neighborhood repairs and community facilities, which are laid out in the city’s "All In for New Orleans" 100-day report. City and charter partners say they will share updated schedules and donor information as contracts are finalized.
InspireNOLA is hosting a dedicated Morris F.X. Jeff Stadium renovation donations page where supporters can chip in. Organizers say the immediate goal is straightforward: restore a safe, playable surface so Algiers’ young athletes can keep competing on a field that meets school and league standards.
