Atlanta rolled into Thursday under that classic Southern summer combo: mild, muggy, and already working on a sweat. Skies are mostly clear with temperatures near 73°F at Hartsfield–Jackson, but patchy fog will try to sneak in around sunrise and could briefly cut visibility on some local streets during the 7–8 a.m. commute. Once we get past that, the day turns warm, with readings heading into the mid-80s and a high near 86°F. A few scattered late-day showers or an isolated thunderstorm may pop up, though coverage looks lighter today than what is lining up later in the week.
Morning Fog And The Commute
The main issue early is the patchy fog, most likely between about 7 and 8 a.m. Expect spotty stretches of reduced visibility on highways and in neighborhoods, especially in low-lying or less-traveled areas. According to the National Weather Service Peachtree City, the fog is not expected to be widespread and should lift by midmorning, bringing back mostly clear conditions before midday. If you hit a pocket of thicker fog, ease off the gas, use low beams instead of high, and leave extra room to stop.
Afternoon Storm Chances
This afternoon, winds stay light from the northwest at about 0–5 mph as temperatures climb toward the mid-80s. A modest chance of scattered showers and a few thunderstorms develops from late afternoon into early evening, with coverage expected to stay in the isolated-to-scattered range. Most people stay dry, but not everyone, so if you have outdoor plans after lunch, toss a compact umbrella in the bag and keep one eye on the sky.
Heavier Rain Friday Into The Weekend
Rain chances start to ramp up Friday and really hit their stride Saturday, when showers and thunderstorms become likely across much of the metro. Some of those storms could drop brief, very heavy downpours that trigger localized flooding in poor-drainage spots. It is all part of the unsettled pattern that has been hanging around all week; for the bigger-picture setup, see our earlier coverage in Storm Train Targets Atlanta. Ahead of the wetter weekend, expect Friday to feel breezier at times, with gusts up to about 20 mph.
What To Do Today
Plan for a slower ride on any foggy or damp roads, and never try to drive through standing water, no matter how shallow it looks. If you have sensitive outdoor plans Friday or Saturday, start eyeing an indoor backup now. Keep tabs on radar and local traffic feeds through the day, and if you hear thunder, head inside and stay there until the storm clears. We will pass along updates if any watches or warnings are issued.
