A Monday morning visit to a Flatlands laundromat ended in deadly gunfire on Utica Avenue, police said, leaving one man dead and another wounded just after the start of the workday.
The shooting happened around 8 a.m., according to authorities. A 41-year-old man was shot multiple times inside the laundromat and a second man, described as about 68 years old, was grazed in the foot. The older man was reported in stable condition.
As reported by ABC7 New York, the younger victim was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. That outlet also reported that no arrests had been made and investigators had not yet identified a motive.
Scene and response
Officers responded to the laundromat, secured the business and began canvassing the block for witnesses and surveillance footage. The normally routine morning at the neighborhood spot quickly shifted into an active homicide investigation.
Emergency responders transported the wounded man to a local hospital, while homicide detectives led the probe inside and outside the laundromat, speaking with anyone who might have seen or heard the shooting.
Broader pattern
Shootings inside small businesses, including laundromats, have surfaced across the city this year, adding to worries among residents and local leaders who see everyday spaces turning into crime scenes.
The NYPD's shooting-incident dataset on NYC Open Data shows that Brooklyn continues to account for a large share of the city's recorded shooting incidents. Similar cases, such as a fatal Queens laundromat shooting in February, have added to the sense that no corner of the city is fully insulated from gun violence.
How to help
Anyone with information is asked to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit an anonymous tip online via Crime Stoppers, authorities said. Investigators have also asked neighbors and business owners to review any door-bell or security camera footage from around the time of the 8 a.m. shooting.
Authorities have not released the victim's name, and the investigation remains active. This story will be updated as more details become available.
