A police-involved shooting on Detroit's east side is under investigation yesterday afternoon, after an encounter between an officer and a suspect shut down part of Moross Road. Officers responded to the 19000 block of Moross and temporarily closed the street between Laing and Lansdowne while investigators processed the scene. Detroit police said the incident involved an officer and a suspect and that the officer was not hit. Details were still thin as SkyFOX and first responders arrived.
Police on the scene
According to FOX 2 Detroit, officers converged on the 19000 block of Moross as the station's SkyFOX helicopter headed to the area. The outlet reported that Moross was shut down between Laing and Lansdowne while investigators secured the scene, and that it was not yet clear whether anyone else had been injured.
Recent violence on the east side
This latest case lands in the middle of a violent month on Detroit's east side. On May 10, a fatal car-to-car shooting on Hayes left one man dead, part of a pattern of shootings that has kept detectives busy across the neighborhood, as per Hoodline.
How the investigation moves forward
Serious uses of force by Detroit officers and citizen complaints are reviewed through the city's Office of the Chief Investigator and Internal Controls units. As outlined in City documents, the Office of the Chief Investigator forwards serious-use-of-force cases for further review, while Internal Controls can recommend criminal prosecution when department policy indicates it may be warranted.
What we still don't know
Authorities have not yet released information about what led up to the shooting or whether any charges might follow, FOX 2 Detroit reported. This story will be updated as police and city officials share more details.
