A Nashville man is facing charges after he allegedly grabbed a woman's face and threatened her with a two-foot sword at a bus stop on Murfreesboro Pike, according to police. The woman told investigators she pushed him away and ended up with a small cut on her lip during the confrontation. The May 7 encounter unfolded at the bus stop outside 1210 Murfreesboro Pike, and the suspect reportedly ran toward a nearby apartment complex before he was later identified.
An arrest affidavit obtained by WSMV and published May 15 identifies the man as Gregory Bohanon Jr. The affidavit states Bohanon first grabbed the woman's vape and threw it across the street, then grabbed her face and pulled a two-foot "sword" from his pants. He is accused of swinging the sword at her without making contact. A witness backed up the woman's story, and both the victim and the witness were able to give police Bohanon's name, age, and a recent photo, according to the affidavit.
Charges and legal context
Bohanon is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Under Tennessee law, aggravated assault includes the use or display of a deadly weapon and can be prosecuted as a felony. The full statute and penalty framework are laid out in Tennessee Code §39-13-102.
How the incident fits local trends
The sword threat lands on a growing list of unusual and serious weapon-related encounters in Nashville. In late April, a man was accused of threatening people with a machete on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, as reported by WSMV. Metro police also issued a statement after a March shooting at a WeGo bus stop on Murfreesboro Pike, citing ongoing safety concerns along the corridor. That release is available from the Metro Nashville Police Department.
Bohanon's arrest marks the beginning of a criminal case that will move through Davidson County courts. Prosecutors and police may release more information as the case progresses.
