
Inner Circle Tavern quietly slid into the Aurora dining scene in April, taking over a well-known restaurant building at 271 E. Garfield Road. Owner Luke Haldeman and chef Kyle Hilfer are running a compact, French-leaning dinner program in a dining room that tops out at about 45 seats. The kitchen turns out small plates alongside larger entrées, and the restaurant is currently open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.
Haldeman, a veteran of the 56 Kitchen Group and Crumb and Spigot, has described the project as “a small, charming, word-of-mouth destination,” according to Cleveland Scene. He told the outlet the team “opened kind of under the radar,” and said early feedback from diners has been overwhelmingly positive.

Per the restaurant’s website, Inner Circle Tavern serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. The site lists a phone number for reservations, plus a simple map and links to the full food and drink lineup.
A familiar building's new act
The corner space at 271 E. Garfield Road is hardly a rookie address. It previously housed James Place, a wine bar and bistro that opened in 2007 and operated for roughly 17 years before closing in 2023, then briefly hosted Rockfish for a three-month run, according to Cleveland Scene. The former wine bar turned bistro seats about 45 guests in total, including the bar area, a scale that carries over to its new life as Inner Circle Tavern.
What to expect
The online menu at Inner Circle Tavern features meat and cheese boards, seasonal salads, and small plates like tempura-fried mushrooms and housemade pâté. Larger entrées include steak au poivre, bone-marrow carbonara, beef short ribs, and a daily fresh fish. With seating capped at around 45, the bistro is geared toward a cozy, reservation-friendly crowd rather than a fast-turnover dinner rush.
For now, Haldeman says the goal is to keep Inner Circle Tavern a low-key neighborhood spot while the team fine-tunes the menu and service. The focus is on building a steady local following and keeping the food straightforward and well executed.
