A late-night stabbing on a quiet stretch of Second Street NE in Mary Ann Township left two people wounded Thursday and ended with an 18-year-old Newark man in custody miles away in Zanesville, according to authorities. Deputies who arrived at the scene found two victims with stab wounds, and emergency crews rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect initially fled the area but was later tracked down and arrested in Zanesville.
Deputies with the Licking County Sheriff’s Office were called to Second Street NE at about 11:25 PM, where they discovered two people suffering from stab wounds, according to WSYX. Both victims were transported to Licking Memorial Hospital for treatment, which serves as the county’s main acute-care facility in Newark. The station reports the investigation is ongoing.
Arrest and charges
Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Newark resident Luke Hummel. He ran from the scene after the stabbing but was later located along Matthews Avenue in Zanesville, where officers took him into custody.
Hummel was taken to the Licking County Justice Center and booked on charges of aggravated burglary and felonious assault, as reported by WSYX. The Licking County Sheriff’s Office lists the Justice Center at 155 E Main St. in Newark, and officials say the case remains under investigation.
