A search for a missing swimmer in Noonday Creek ended in tragedy this week after crews pulled a body from the Cobb County waterway, two days after the person was first reported missing. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity while the investigation moves forward.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Cobb County officers responded to Noonday Creek after getting reports that someone had entered the creek and failed to resurface. The station reported that officers later confirmed a recovery and noted May 24 as the date of the initial call, sharing video from the scene as crews worked along the water.

Search and recovery

WSB-TV reported that police were called around 10 p.m. Sunday after a person attempting to swim across Noonday Creek did not resurface. Dive teams went back out and recovered the body from the water on Tuesday morning.

Police told WSB that recent storms caused the creek’s water levels to "rise significantly," which sped up the current and turned the water into a hazardous stretch for anyone trying to wade or swim across.

Creek conditions and safety

Noonday Creek runs through parts of Cobb and Cherokee counties and is at the center of a local trail-extension effort, according to Cobb County planning documents that outline the creek corridor and nearby trailheads.

The National Weather Service "Turn Around, Don't Drown" guidance warns that fast-moving water after storms can be deadly, stressing that people should steer clear of swollen creeks and flooded roadways until levels drop and conditions calm down.

Officials have not released the recovered person’s name and have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, WSB-TV reported. Investigators continue to review what led up to the fatal incident in the creek.
