A late-night fire at an apartment building on North Yakima Avenue in Tacoma left one person dead and forced other residents to evacuate, according to the Tacoma Fire Department. Crews arrived to find flames on the building’s first floor that were climbing up the side of the structure and were able to knock the blaze down quickly. Fire officials said the fire was contained to a single unit and some exterior siding, and no additional injuries were reported.

In a post on X, Tacoma Fire said crews were called at about 11:47 p.m. for reports of “an apartment building with flames visible.” Firefighters arrived to find fire on the first floor and spreading along the exterior of the building, then extinguished it quickly to limit further damage.

In the same X update, Tacoma Fire reported one death in connection with the blaze and noted that all other residents made it out safely. No other injuries were reported. The department said the fire damage was confined to one apartment unit and a portion of the exterior.
Investigation and next steps
The News Tribune reported that it had reached out to Tacoma Fire spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd for additional details on the cause of the fire but had not yet received a response. Officials have not released further information about the person who died or what sparked the blaze.
