A quiet Thursday night on St. Cloud's northside turned tense after witnesses reported a 32-year-old man was waving a handgun and threatening people near the 400 block of 10th Avenue North. Police moved in, set up a perimeter around a nearby home, and later used a search warrant to enter. The man eventually walked out and was arrested without incident. Officers are now asking neighbors to check their exterior security cameras for any footage that could help piece together what happened.
How officers say the operation unfolded
According to WJON, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of 10th Avenue North at about 8 p.m. after getting reports that a man armed with a handgun had threatened multiple people, then gone into a nearby residence. The department's Criminal Investigative Unit obtained a search warrant and called in the St. Cloud Police SWAT team to help serve it. Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Cortney Turney of St. Cloud. A short time after officers arrived, Turney came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
How neighbors can help
The St. Cloud Police Department is asking residents who have exterior camera footage from the area to share it with investigators. The department's website lists contact options, including its non-emergency line at 320-251-1200 and an information desk at 101 11th Ave. N. Officers urged residents with footage or tips to reach out to police rather than trying to approach the scene themselves.
Local context
St. Cloud police have leaned on their SWAT team for search warrants in other recent cases as well. In April, WJON reported that the department's SWAT unit helped enter a home during a drug investigation that ended in arrests. Authorities say multi-agency task forces sometimes work with local units when investigations call for specialized teams. Police have not released additional details on potential charges or a motive in the 10th Avenue case, and the investigation remains active.
