Owners Joe and Myriam Nabulsi told customers they were retiring, and word of the sudden shutdown left many Oak Forest regulars caught off guard.
Owners Sign Off With Simple Facebook Goodbye
On Friday, the couple posted a short message on Facebook that read, "Today is our last day," thanking guests, staff, and the surrounding community for years of support, according to KHOU. The note gave a nod to the storms, freezes, and other rough patches both Houston and the restaurant had pushed through together. KHOU also reported it was House of Fries' first public update in nearly three years and said the owners were stepping away to retire.
A 15-Year Run On Antoine Drive
Joe and Myriam Nabulsi opened House of Fries in 2011 and kept the compact storefront at 5322 Antoine Drive going for more than a decade, according to the Houston Chronicle. The paper noted that the menu stretched from breakfast tacos to loaded beef-nacho fries and big, messy signature burgers, and that in their farewell the couple specifically thanked former employees and longtime customers. For many in the neighborhood, the spot became part of weekly routines and early-morning school drop-offs.
Neighborhood Staple Faces An Uncertain Future
Local listings and review sites show the Antoine Drive shop had grown into a neighborhood staple for battered fries and budget-friendly comfort food, according to Eater Houston. One patron told the Houston Chronicle, "My daughter and I have many memories grabbing breakfast tacos before dropping her at OSL school around the corner." The owners did not share any details about what might replace House of Fries, and there has been no immediate public word of a buyer or new tenant for the Antoine Drive space.
