A quiet Sunday night on Old Camden Road ended in a burst of gunfire when a passing car opened fire outside a Lancaster home, killing a 23-year-old man and leaving neighbors rattled, according to county deputies. Witnesses told investigators that a vehicle pulled up, shots were exchanged, and the victim was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. Detectives say they are now counting on community tips to help identify whoever was behind the wheel and the trigger.
Deputies say they found 23-year-old Jaheim Crawford-Hood suffering from a gunshot wound; he later died at the hospital, according to WCCB Charlotte. The station reports the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday at a home on Old Camden Road, and investigators are treating the scene as an active homicide investigation. Authorities have not released any information about a possible motive.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
The Rock Hill Herald reports the shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Old Camden Road and that Sheriff Barry Faile and Coroner Karla Knight-Deese were notified, per The Herald. Faile told the paper, “This shooting happened in the presence of witnesses, and we need those folks and anybody else who knows anything about this case to talk with us.” Deputies say the incident does not appear to be random.
Witnesses described people in a passing car exchanging gunfire with those outside the house, and deputies say Crawford-Hood was the only person hit. No arrests have been announced so far, and authorities are urging anyone with video or information to contact investigators, according to WCCB Charlotte. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office lists its main line as 803-283-3388 and maintains a tip portal on its website for anonymous leads, according to the sheriff's office.
County Context
The killing is the latest violent episode in Lancaster County this spring. Local reporting documented an April 3 shooting on East Stevens Drive that left a man wounded and other late-night incidents that prompted repeated pleas for surveillance video, per reporting on a daylight shooting victim airlifted and coverage by The State. Investigators say even short clips or a partial license plate from home cameras can be crucial to identifying suspects.
