Early Sunday morning in Milton, a car went off I-93 north near Exit 3, tore through the woods and ended up in a pond, critically injuring two people, authorities said. Massachusetts State Police troopers responded around 3 a.m., and crews shut down the nearby on-ramp while rescuers worked the scene. The ramp reopened later in the morning, and the crash remains under investigation.
What State Police Say Happened
Massachusetts State Police told reporters they responded to a single-vehicle crash around 3 a.m. near Exit 3 on I-93 north and reported serious injuries to the driver and life-threatening injuries to at least one passenger, according to Boston 25. The outlet also reports officials closed the ramp for crash reconstruction and reopened it around 7:20 a.m. while detectives processed the scene.
On-Scene Video And Rescue Effort
Video from the scene showed a white vehicle partially submerged in the water, and NBC Boston reported all five occupants were taken to area hospitals, with the driver sustaining the most severe injuries. NBC Boston added that a tow truck later pulled the vehicle from the pond and that a large emergency response included police, fire, EMS and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
A Trouble Spot On A Busy Stretch
The Exit 3 area has seen major collisions before. A wrong-way crash there in October 2020 killed one person and led to an investigation by state police's crash-reconstruction unit, WCVB reported. That history underscores the recurring safety challenges on the busy I-93 corridor.
Authorities have released few details about what led up to Sunday’s crash, and investigators continue to process the scene, according to Boston 25. This story will be updated as state police release additional information.
