Nighttime traffic through Parleys Canyon is about to get a lot tighter. Starting Monday, May 11, crews will shut down lanes on Interstate 80 between 2300 East and Exit 130 every night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Drivers traveling between Salt Lake City and Park City should plan for heavy overnight delays and crowded ramps heading into the valley.
The work is part of a multiyear project to preserve and upgrade I‑80. The effort will repave about 22 miles of roadway, improve eight bridges, install roughly 11 miles of fiber‑optic cable, and rehabilitate nearly 50 miles of culverts, according to UDOT.
“I‑80 is a critical route for Utah’s economy,” UDOT Region Two Director Robert Stewart said in a statement. He added that the work is designed to keep the corridor safe and reliable for commuters, freight, and visitors, per UDOT.
When and where crews will be working
Crews are set to start repaving the first segment, from 2300 East to the Stillman Bridge, as early as May 11, with work on that stretch expected to continue through June. During this phase, I‑80 will be reduced to one lane overnight Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Drivers can find more details on UDOT and can sign up for opt‑in text alerts through UDOT.
Big events could make traffic even worse
The Salt Lake City round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross is scheduled for May 9 at Rice‑Eccles Stadium, which could add extra congestion on local approaches and I‑215 ramps, according to the event schedule on Supercross Live. Local outlets also report that most construction impacts are planned overnight or on weekends, so anyone headed to events or late‑night shifts should pad their travel time, as noted by KUTV.
Project timeline and what comes next
According to UDOT, paving from Mountain Dell Reservoir to Lambs Canyon is scheduled to follow later this summer. Bridge reconstruction and rehabilitation are slated to begin in 2027. Officials note that all timelines are weather‑dependent and subject to change, with paving expected to wrap up before the end of 2026 and bridge work continuing into 2027.
For those who have to travel through Parleys Canyon during work, UDOT advises building in extra time, considering I‑215 or US‑40 as alternate routes, and checking the UDOT Traffic app for live updates.
