An overnight rollover on State Highway 288 near McHard Road in Pearland killed a woman early Thursday, according to police. The single-vehicle crash happened around 1 a.m. and involved four people. Three survivors were taken to local hospitals, and nearby ramps and lanes were shut down while first responders worked the scene.
Pearland police told CW39 that the vehicle carried four occupants and that one woman died in the crash. Three others were transported to area hospitals. Officers closed both the right and left interchange ramps on Highway 288 near McHard Road, and the highway's HOV lane was also shut down because of rail damage as crews cleared the wreck, police said.
Closures Pile On 288 Commuter Headaches
State Highway 288 is a major commuter route into Houston, so any lane or ramp shutdown can quickly trigger long backups. Past crashes have led to temporary HOV lane closures on 288, showing how a single wreck can ripple through the corridor, as reported after a fatal accident near Airport Blvd.
Investigation Still Underway
Pearland police said the crash remains under investigation and that the victim's identity had not been released as of Thursday morning. Authorities asked anyone with information or footage of the rollover to contact the Pearland Police Department, according to CW39.
Drivers in the area were urged to expect delays while crews worked to repair roadway and rail damage. Officials did not immediately say how long those repairs would take.
