For a few tense minutes on Wednesday afternoon, the quiet hum of trains near the 900 South TRAX stop gave way to sirens and squad cars as Salt Lake City police rushed to reports of shots fired south of downtown. The scare turned out to be a pellet gun fired from a passing car, not a traditional firearm, and no injuries were reported. The brief surge in police presence rippled through the Central Ninth and Ballpark corridor as officers checked the area and tried to sort out what had actually happened.
What police said
The Salt Lake City Police Department told KUTV that “This is not a shooting but rather someone who fired a pellet gun from a car.” Officers responded just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the department’s account to the station. No one was hurt.
Where it happened
The disturbance was reported near the 900 South TRAX platform at 200 West and 900 South, an infill light-rail stop that serves UTA’s TRAX lines on a key approach into downtown. According to Wikipedia, the station sits on the main route into the city center and connects to multiple TRAX lines.
Past police activity at the stop
This is not the first time serious police activity has focused on this otherwise modest platform. In 2022, a Utah Transit Authority officer shot a man near the same intersection during a robbery investigation, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. That earlier incident put an extra spotlight on safety and transit policing around downtown TRAX stops.
Investigation and next steps
As of the latest update reported by KUTV, Salt Lake City police said they were still investigating the pellet-gun incident and had not reported any arrests. This story will be updated if the department releases additional information.
