Pike Place Market is kicking off a warm-weather experiment that lets adults grab a drink to-go and wander the stalls with a buzz of a different kind. The new “Sip and Savor” pilot launches Friday, June 5, running Fridays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. through Labor Day weekend. Market leaders say they are aiming to boost small businesses and give visitors one more excuse to hang around a little longer with their beverages and waterfront views.
How Sip & Savor Works
According to Pike Place Market, guests who want to participate will be ID-checked, issued a wristband and required to use designated cups inside clearly marked areas. Only drinks in those specific cups will be allowed, and only during the pilot’s operating hours. Staff will be out roaming the market to keep an eye on things, remind people about the rules and nudge everyone toward responsible sipping.
Who’s Pouring and Who Signed Off
The Pike Place Market PDA Executive Committee signed off on the pilot on May 21, as reported by KING 5. That report notes that 24 vendors are joining in, including Rachel's Ginger Beer, Lonely Siren, Old Stove Brewing, Alibi Room and DeLaurenti’s.
Street Tweaks and Extra Seating
Pike Place Market also highlights a physical makeover to match the new drinking rules, with 50 additional picnic tables going in along Pike Place and the MarketFront for the summer season. Sip & Savor days will coincide with reduced vehicle traffic on Pike Place, creating a more open, walkable setup for anyone looking to drink, snack or just sit and people-watch.
Market officials emphasize that this is a time-limited experiment. Organizers plan to track crowd movement, vendor sales and public-safety outcomes before deciding whether to keep the program going or scale it up. The schedule is intentionally tight, limited to weekend afternoons, so the trial stays contained while still giving vendors room to test different sales patterns.
If you are heading down to try it, be ready to show ID, throw on a wristband and keep your drink in the market-issued cup while you walk or sit. For the full announcement and a detailed vendor list, check out coverage from KING 5.
