Flames tore through playground equipment at Doolittle Park on Thursday, bringing Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's arson investigators racing to a spot many families consider their neighborhood backyard.
Fire officials said crews quickly knocked down the blaze and confirmed that no one was hurt. The damaged playground sits inside the larger Doolittle complex on the city's west side, where investigators spent part of the day collecting evidence at the scene.
According to FOX5 Las Vegas, arson investigators responded to the park and were working to determine how the fire started. The station reported that firefighters brought the blaze under control and that there were no reported injuries, a small bit of good news for a community already on edge.
Where It Happened
The playground is part of the Doolittle complex, which includes the Doolittle Community Center and the adjacent Kianga Isoke Palacio Park. The city lists the community center's address as 1950 N. J St. and notes that the site has a pool, indoor gyms and outdoor courts used for youth programs. Per the City of Las Vegas, the center is a long-standing neighborhood hub.
Investigation Under Way
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue operates an arson and bomb squad that investigates suspicious blazes and handles evidence collection at scenes, according to department materials. Those documents describe the unit's role in probing possible intentional fires and supporting criminal investigations.
So far, officials have not publicly confirmed a cause for the Doolittle playground fire, and no arrests have been announced. Per Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, investigators were on scene collecting evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
Park Safety Questions Return
The Doolittle complex has long been a neighborhood anchor for sports and youth activities, but safety worries have been bubbling up again. Earlier this month, three people were wounded in a shooting near the complex's basketball courts, as reported when three people were wounded, renewing calls from residents for more programming and better lighting.
Investigators say the playground fire investigation is ongoing and officials are expected to release more details as they become available. This story will be updated when Las Vegas Fire & Rescue or police provide new information.
