A quiet evening yesterday in Grand Rapids turned tragic when a 14-year-old boy and a woman in her 30s were fatally shot just outside the playground at Southwest Elementary School, according to police. First responders found the teenage victim at the scene, while the woman was rushed to a hospital, where she later died. The shooting was reported around 6:40 p.m. near Oakland Avenue SW and Rumsey Street SW. Police say the suspect ran from the area but was later located and taken into custody.
What police reported
According to CBS Detroit, Grand Rapids Police said both victims suffered serious gunshot wounds, and officers recovered the scene near the school's playground. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman, described as being in her 30s, died at a hospital. Police did not immediately release the names of the victims or of the person taken into custody.
School closures and support
Grand Rapids Public Schools announced that classes were canceled today at Southwest Elementary and Southwest Middle High. The district said crisis teams and school therapists will be on both campuses when classes resume tomorrow. “This closure will allow for additional time for our Southwest community to process what has happened in our neighborhood,” the district wrote.
Police ask for tips
Investigators are still working to understand what led to the shooting and have urged anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward. Police asked people with information to contact Grand Rapids Police Department detectives at 616-456-3380 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345, according to the police statement reported by CBS Detroit.
Neighborhood context
The shooting unfolded in the Roosevelt Park area, adding to community concerns about violence in Grand Rapids. Local reporting has noted a string of serious incidents this year that have intensified worries over youth safety. Coverage from WGVU highlighted a multiple-victim homicide in January that drew sharp attention to neighborhood safety and led to renewed calls for more resources for violence prevention.
