Clallam County deputies on Thursday arrested 46-year-old Clinton Laverne King outside a home in Port Angeles in connection with the Feb. 21 killing of 73-year-old Danny Steven Kendrick. Kendrick was found earlier this year along Deer Park Road, and investigators later determined he had been shot multiple times and ruled his death a homicide.
How detectives say the arrest unfolded
Investigators say King’s arrest was the endpoint of months of work that involved surveillance and a series of search warrants. Detectives followed a vehicle from near Black Diamond Road and moved in once it stopped outside a residence in the 1300 block of West 16th Street, where King was taken into custody without incident. Deputies also seized a vehicle they believe is connected to the case. Undercover officers with the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Peninsula Crisis Response Team assisted with the operation, and Stevens Middle School was briefly placed on a modified lockdown as a precaution, as reported by Peninsula Daily News.
Victim and timeline
Deputies found Kendrick in the 6300 block of Deer Park Road on Feb. 21. An autopsy later concluded he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the case was officially classified as a homicide on March 5. As the investigation continued, detectives asked the public to share tips and any surveillance footage from the Deer Park and O’Brien Road areas. Authorities say evidence gathered over the following months helped lead to Thursday’s arrest, as reported by KIRO 7.
Charges and agencies involved
The sheriff’s office said King was arrested on investigation of second-degree murder. Investigators executed more than 45 search warrants during the case. Agencies assisting included the Port Angeles Police Department, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air & Marine Unit, the Washington State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team and the state crime lab, according to the sheriff’s office, as reported by Peninsula Daily News.
