A pre-dawn fire tore through a South Memphis business on Tuesday, sending a thick column of smoke over the neighborhood and drawing a heavy response from firefighters. The blaze was reported shortly after 4:20 a.m. in the 300 block of East Bodley Avenue, and crews stayed at the scene into the morning to keep the flames in check. Officials had not released a cause and said early on that it was still not clear whether anyone had been injured.
What Happened And Who Responded
According to WREG, Memphis Fire Department units were working an active, ongoing business fire at the address, with a WREG photographer, Keith Caldwell, capturing images of heavy smoke and firefighters surrounding the scene. The station reported that crews were concentrating on knocking down the flames and protecting nearby structures as they worked. At the time of that early update, WREG noted that both the cause of the fire and any possible injuries were still unknown.
Recent Context In South Memphis
Neighbors in South Memphis have already been on alert after several notable fires in recent months, including a nighttime church arson in February that church torched in nighttime arson covered. That earlier blaze intensified concern over potentially suspicious fires and left residents uneasy while investigators worked through the case.
Investigation And Resources
The Memphis Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for origin-and-cause work and arson investigations, and the city’s website lists phone and email contacts along with instructions for getting fire reports. According to the city, those reports can be picked up directly at the department office, and investigators carry police powers so they can move arson investigations along when necessary. Residents with tips or safety concerns are encouraged to contact MFD or local police so investigators can follow up.
Next Steps For The Neighborhood
Traffic and nearby businesses were briefly disrupted while firefighters worked to put out the blaze and clear the scene. Officials said they expect to share more details as the investigation moves forward. WREG has posted photos and its early report, and we will update this story as additional official information is released.
