Flames tore through several attached rowhomes on the 300 block of West Wellens Street in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood early Thursday, drawing a fast response from firefighters and a crowd of worried neighbors. Crews brought the blaze under control just before 4 a.m., and there were no reported injuries. Several nearby streets were shut down as emergency crews worked the scene and residents watched from the sidewalks.
According to CBS Philadelphia, video posted to the Citizen app showed heavy flames pouring from at least one home on the block while firefighters battled multiple fires on the 300-block of Wellens Street. The outlet reported that the situation was under control shortly before 4 a.m. and noted a number of road closures as the response unfolded.
Other Olney blazes this year
NBC10 Philadelphia reported that an early-morning rowhome fire on Jan. 13, on the 100 block of West Nedro Avenue, displaced five residents. On Feb. 21, a nighttime Olney house blaze sent two children to the hospital, highlighting how quickly flames can spread through tightly packed, attached homes.
Investigation underway
Officials have not yet released a cause, and the fire remains under investigation, according to CBS Philadelphia. The outlet described the situation as developing and noted its crew was heading to the scene. Typically, investigators share more details once the area is fully secured and their work is further along.
Fire safety reminders
The Philadelphia Fire Department urges residents, especially in rowhouse neighborhoods, to test smoke alarms regularly and keep escape routes clear in case a fast-moving fire breaks out. For households that need smoke detectors, the city offers free installations through Philly 311. More safety guidance is available from the Philadelphia Fire Department.
