An early-morning burst of gunfire in East Knoxville’s Five Points neighborhood left one man wounded and another in handcuffs, after police say a 27-year-old Alcoa man was tracked down on I-40 East and hauled in for questioning.
Officers found a 30-year-old Knoxville man outside an apartment in the 400 block of Taylor Homes Road shortly after 3 a.m. with at least one gunshot wound to his lower body, according to the Knoxville Police Department. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where his injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Police say the suspect’s vehicle was later stopped on I-40 East by Sevier County deputies and Sevierville officers, and the driver was brought to the Public Safety Complex for questioning.
Investigators quickly developed 27-year-old Isaiah Hill of Alcoa as a suspect, KPD said. Hill was transported to the Public Safety Complex and interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives as they work to piece together what led up to the shooting.
How officers tracked the suspect
KPD Communications Manager Scott Erland told WVLT that officers later spotted the suspect’s car on I-40 East, where Sevierville officers and Sevier County deputies carried out the traffic stop that ended with Hill’s arrest. Those agencies then transported Hill back to Knoxville, where KPD homicide detectives took over the investigation.
Victim condition and investigation status
The wounded man, described by police as a 30-year-old Knoxville resident, was treated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center for a lower-body gunshot wound and is expected to survive, according to the Knoxville Police Department. Charges are pending while KPD Homicide Unit detectives continue to sort through the circumstances of the early-morning shooting.
What’s next
Investigators have not released any information about a possible motive or whether there was a prior relationship between Hill and the victim. Police say the case remains active and that formal charges will be filed as the investigation develops.
