A 25-year-old Charlotte trucker died after a pre-dawn collision on Interstate 95 southbound in Caroline County, Virginia, last Wednesday, according to Virginia State Police. The crash, which involved two tractor-trailers in the early morning hours, left the driver with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital and later died. State police say the crash remains under investigation.
WBTV identified the driver as 25-year-old Xavion Mahoney of Charlotte and reported that he was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer that rear-ended a Freightliner. According to the station, Mahoney was transported from the scene with life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. Investigators have not released any information about what led up to the collision.
Virginia State Police preliminary findings
Virginia State Police told WWBT (12 On Your Side) that their preliminary work at the scene indicates one tractor-trailer rear-ended the other at about 4:50 a.m. at the 113-mile marker on I-95 southbound. Troopers said the driver of the truck that struck the other vehicle "succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash" and confirmed that the southbound lanes were closed for several hours while they processed the scene. Authorities have not said whether impairment, speed or mechanical issues played any role.
Traffic and scene response
WBTV reported that southbound I-95 was shut down at mile marker 113 during the emergency response, with crews gradually reopening lanes after wreckage removal and evidence collection. Local emergency services and state troopers stayed on scene while investigators documented the crash and cleared debris. Authorities have asked anyone with information or relevant footage from the area around the time of the wreck to contact Virginia State Police.
Local ties and records
Public FMCSA carrier records list a small Charlotte-based company called The Mahoney Group Inc. at a Charlotte address and show an officer named Xavion Mahoney on its filings. It is not known whether that carrier or its equipment were involved in this crash. As part of the ongoing investigation, officials would need to confirm vehicle registration, maintenance records and driver logs, but Virginia State Police have not released those details.
