Early Saturday in Pepperell, a fire inside a mobile home on Harper Way left an older resident and their dog dead, according to fire officials. Firefighters were called to the scene at about 2:50 a.m. and later found the person deceased inside the home.
What Officials Say
According to Boston 25 News, a neighbor dialed 911 to report a mobile home engulfed in flames on Harper Way. Crews went inside but initially could not locate anyone. The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal told Boston 25 that both the resident and a dog were killed, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire Risk In Manufactured Homes
Manufactured and mobile homes can be especially vulnerable to fast-moving fires, and national fire-safety data show that older adults make up a disproportionate share of deadly home fire victims. According to NFPA's Fire Loss report, one- and two-family dwellings, a category that includes manufactured homes, account for most home fire deaths and injuries in the United States.
Pepperell's Recent Fire History
This is not the first time the town has faced a deadly blaze. In 2022, a Pepperell house fire killed seven dogs and sent two people to the hospital, according to reporting by Boston.com.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity. The State Fire Marshal's office is leading the investigation, and the medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, Boston 25 News reported. Officials say they will share more information as it becomes available.
