A 50-year-old St. Augustine man was struck and killed early Wednesday while trying to cross State Road 24 near Northeast 57th Street in unincorporated Alachua County. Troopers said the crash happened at about 6 a.m., and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. A 34-year-old Gainesville woman driving a sedan stayed at the site of the collision and was not injured. Investigators are still working to piece together exactly how and why the crossing unfolded.
What Troopers Reported
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man entered the roadway directly in front of a northeastbound sedan traveling in the left lane and "failed to yield the right of way." The agency's incident log lists the collision as a fatality and notes that the stretch of road did not have lighting at the time. Troopers said the pedestrian was not wearing reflective or high-visibility clothing, which further reduced how visible he was to approaching traffic.
Visibility and Safety
Dark, unlit highway segments make pedestrians tough to spot even for attentive drivers, and federal safety guidance leans heavily on visibility as a key layer of protection. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that people walking near traffic wear retroreflective clothing or carry a flashlight and use marked crossings when possible, according to NHTSA. Drivers are likewise urged to slow down and keep an eye out for anyone walking along or crossing busy state routes, especially in low-light conditions.
A Stretch With Recent Crashes
This span of SR 24 has already seen serious trouble this year. Troopers investigated a March collision that killed a motorcyclist on SR 24 east of SW 56th Terrace, as reported by News4JAX. Local reporting has flagged a mix of high speeds, varied traffic and limited lighting along portions of the roadway, a combination that safety advocates say can make crashes more likely, per 352Today.
Investigation
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate Wednesday's crash. No charges have been announced, and the victim's name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. Troopers have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to contact the FHP Gainesville post, according to the agency's incident notice.
