A 30-year-old man was shot through the front door of a Back of the Yards home early Monday, leaving him hospitalized in serious condition after a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet pre-dawn hours on the Southwest Side.
Chicago police say the shooter opened fire around 4:50 a.m. at a residence in the 4600 block of South Winchester Avenue, striking the victim in the head and shoulder. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, officers found that the shots had been fired through the home’s front door. Detectives remained on the scene for hours as they began piecing together what led up to the attack, but early details were sparse while the initial investigation unfolded.
Neighborhood Trend
The shooting lands in a neighborhood that has already been on edge. Back of the Yards has seen a string of recent gun violence, including an April drive-by that wounded three men and reignited calls for residents to help investigators track down shooters.
That earlier drive-by gunfire and other incidents have pushed outreach groups and longtime neighbors to urge residents to share any surveillance video or tips that might help detectives, hoping community cooperation can break the cycle.
Police Investigation
No arrests have been reported in Monday’s shooting, and Area 1 detectives are handling the case, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago police are asking anyone with information or relevant video to contact Area 1 Detectives at (312) 747-8384 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, per a Chicago Police alert.
Officials have not released further details about a possible motive or suspect. This story will be updated if police provide additional information.
