Southbound Interstate 270 in Dublin turned into a standstill early Wednesday, May 20, after a deadly crash just south of the Tuttle Crossing Boulevard interchange. Investigators say a Toyota Camry slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer, a violent rear-end collision that shut down the southbound lanes for hours and wrecked the morning commute. Authorities said the semi driver was not injured, while the Camry driver was taken to a hospital and later died.
How Officials Say It Happened
According to 10TV, deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office said the semi was slowing for stopped traffic when the Camry hit the back of the trailer. The report states the Camry driver was rushed to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and later pronounced dead, while the semi driver remained uninjured. Southbound I-270 was shut down in the area, and deputies pushed traffic onto a detour using State Route 161 east, U.S. 33 south and Fishinger Road while crews worked the scene.
Detours And Travel Updates
Drivers were told to brace for major delays and to check live traffic information before heading toward the outerbelt. The Ohio Department of Transportation's OHGO site offers camera views and lane-closure alerts for I-270, including the Tuttle Crossing interchange. Commuters reported backups through much of the morning as crews cleared the wreckage and gradually reopened the southbound lanes.
Why The Outerbelt Can Turn Deadly
Those tricky interchanges and short weaving sections along I-270 have a long reputation as problem spots, and crashes involving passenger cars and semis are often among the most severe. A February analysis by Hoodline called out crash-dense stretches of the I-270 outerbelt and noted ODOT projects aimed at cutting down on risky merges and sudden backups. Investigation Ongoing
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation and has not yet released the name of the person who died. The office typically posts updates and press releases on the Franklin County Sheriff's Office site as more information becomes available. This report will be updated if officials release additional details.
