Police are on the hunt for a man accused of pulling a revolver on a fellow rider aboard a southbound Q train as it rolled into Jay Street–MetroTech on April 26, then chasing the 20-year-old victim off the train before calmly hopping back on and continuing his ride. Detectives say the man reboarded, rode to DeKalb Avenue and then left the subway system. On May 13 the NYPD released surveillance images of the person of interest and asked New Yorkers to send in tips or video.
What police say
According to PIX11, the confrontation started as a verbal dispute on the train. Police say the argument escalated when the man allegedly pulled out a revolver, pointed it at the 20-year-old rider and chased him off the train as it pulled into Jay Street–MetroTech. Surveillance video released by the NYPD appears to show the same man later getting back on the train and riding to DeKalb Avenue, where investigators believe he exited the system.
How to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers
The NYPD is urging anyone with information or video of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or through the department’s online tip portal, per the NYPD's Crime Stoppers page. Tips can also be sent via the Crime Stoppers app or by texting CRIMES (274637) and entering TIP577, the city site notes. Police say rewards may be available for information that leads to an arrest.
Transit safety context
The appeal for help lands as subway safety remains under a microscope following a run of high-profile incidents this spring, including a machete attack at Grand Central earlier in April. NBC New York reported that two people were injured in that attack and detailed the police response inside the busy transit hub.
What investigators say next
NYPD Transit Bureau detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and working to track down riders who were on the Q train during the incident. As of the latest update, police have not announced any arrests. Anyone who recognizes the man in the released images is asked to call Crime Stoppers or 911. Investigators are also asking people with potential evidence to save any video they have and to avoid approaching the suspect themselves.
