A quiet Boca Raton block turned tragic last Thursday when, according to deputies, a 90-year-old woman stepped from her driveway into the path of an SUV outside her home and was fatally struck.
Authorities identified the victim as Sandra Friedman. Neighbors were left rattled as emergency crews rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
What happened
According to a crash report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and reporting by CBS12, the collision happened in the 15900 block of Planters Point Drive when an 83-year-old driver in a Jeep Grand Cherokee rounded a left-hand curve and struck Friedman.
CBS12 reports Friedman was thrown to the ground and complained of hip pain at the scene. She was transported to Delray Medical Center, where deputies said she was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m.
Why this matters
Federal data underline how risky a simple walk can be. In 2023, a pedestrian was killed every 72 minutes and more than 7,300 pedestrians died nationwide, according to NHTSA.
Older adults are especially likely to suffer life-threatening injuries when struck, so incidents that happen only a few steps from someone's front door often have fatal outcomes.
Road design and older pedestrians
Safety guidance points to relatively simple changes such as curb extensions, refuge islands and lower crossing speeds as ways to cut risk on streets with curves or limited sight lines, according to the Federal Highway Administration's guidance for older pedestrians.
Local traffic engineers often consider those kinds of fixes when a crash calls attention to a dangerous stretch of roadway.
Local follow-up
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office crash report provided the timeline cited by CBS12, and deputies say the investigation is ongoing.
The incident has renewed attention to pedestrian safety for older residents in Boca Raton and across South Florida.
