The Aldi on Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg had an unplanned drive-through moment yesterday when a red pickup truck plowed straight through the store's front doors, shattering glass and mangling metal at the entrance.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and quickly blocked off the front of the store while responders worked around the broken glass that littered the sidewalk and entryway.
Video from local news coverage shows the red pickup slamming into the main entrance and knocking aside glass and metal fixtures. As WTAE reported, there was "no word yet on whether anyone was hurt" in the immediate aftermath. The station described the situation as a developing story and shared footage of the collision.
Where and when it happened
The crash occurred around 9 a.m. at the Aldi located at 401 Penn Ave in Wilkinsburg, according to WPXI. The station reported that emergency dispatchers said no one was taken to a hospital following the incident, and showed first responders on scene shortly after the impact.
Store status and local backdrop
ALDI's store locator lists the Wilkinsburg supermarket at that same 401 Penn Ave address, confirming it as the site of the crash. Developer Ellsworth Equities has previously described the store as a key piece of local redevelopment, highlighting the project as the return of a national grocer to the borough and identifying the same Penn Avenue location in its materials.
Cause still under investigation
Officials had not yet released any information about what caused the pickup to slam into the store entrance, and WPXI reported that the incident remained under investigation. Authorities had not announced any charges or additional details by midday Friday, and neither police nor Aldi representatives had issued a detailed public statement as of the latest reports.
