New and returning families in Northside Independent School District are on a deadline if they want a guaranteed school bus seat next year.
NISD is telling parents to pre-register any student who will need district bus service for the 2026–27 school year by June 30. The district warns that bus stops will not be created automatically and that families who miss the cutoff may be waiting one to two weeks after school begins before a stop is assigned.
That is a big shift from the previous setup, when the district routinely created bus stops automatically for students who lived more than two miles from their assigned campus.
District cites route overhaul, budget pressure
As reported by KSAT, the change is tied to a new routing system that NISD says should boost efficiency while helping manage a roughly $35 million budget shortfall.
"We want to make sure that we are going to stops that have students in them," Transportation Director Tesilia Soliz told KSAT. Local coverage has also noted that the district moves tens of thousands of students by bus each day, underscoring how disruptive any systemwide routing tweak could be.
How to register and the deadline
Families are expected to register through the district’s Home Access Center and can check whether their student is eligible for bus service using the Boundaries and Buses tool, according to Northside ISD.
New-to-district registration opened January 20, and returning families started registering in March. NISD says that eligible students must be registered by June 30 to guarantee transportation on the first day of school. The district’s registration page includes step by step instructions plus direct links to the Home Access Center and the Boundaries and Buses lookup for parents who need a little hand-holding through the online process.
Staffing and service concerns
District leaders say tightening up routes should eliminate empty stops and shorten ride times overall. Some families, though, are eyeing the fine print and worrying about what happens to their morning and afternoon routines if a stop is not ready right away.
Coverage in the San Antonio Express-News has documented ongoing driver shortages and vacancies across area districts that have led to route consolidations and double runs. That staffing crunch is the backdrop for Northside’s tighter route planning and helps explain why the district is trying to avoid sending buses to stops with no riders.
Those same pressures also mean that even small changes in how stops are assigned could have noticeable impact for families during the first weeks of school.
If you miss the deadline
According to the district FAQ, eligible students who are registered for transportation after June 30 may need to wait up to two weeks after the first day of school before receiving official bus stop and route information.
Parents who need help can contact the Transportation Department or their campus attendance secretary. Bus information will be available after August 1 through the Boundaries and Buses tool, and full registration details, including links to the Home Access Center, are posted on Northside ISD.
