A 27-year-old Sauk Rapids woman was killed Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle crash in Sauk Rapids Township after a car pulled into her path at a rural intersection, according to authorities. Meghan Moran was riding near the intersection of Mayhew Lake Road Northeast and 10th Street Northeast when the collision occurred. Emergency crews took her to CentraCare St. Cloud Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The Benton County Sheriff's Office says the crash remains under investigation.
Crash details from investigators
According to KNSI, deputies say the call came in at 12:35 p.m. They report that a 60-year-old St. Cloud man driving west on 10th Street stopped at the stop sign, then pulled into the intersection and struck Moran as she traveled south on Mayhew Lake Road. Investigators told the station that Moran had the right of way when the collision happened.
Statewide motorcycle crash trends
Per the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's annual crash facts, Minnesota recorded 80 motorcyclist deaths in 2022, with collisions involving other motor vehicles listed as a leading first harmful event in fatal motorcycle crashes. The report also notes that many deadly motorcycle collisions occur on rural and township roads and often involve failures to yield or turning movements. Those numbers underline how a routine turn across an intersection can turn deadly for a rider.
Why intersections are risky for riders
National research identifies turning-across-path crashes at intersections as a common and deadly scenario for motorcyclists, prompting recommendations for improved visibility, continued rider training, and roadway engineering changes. The Transportation Research Board highlights intersection countermeasures, including improved sight lines and targeted education, as priorities for reducing motorcycle collisions. Traffic safety experts say both rider awareness and driver vigilance are crucial to keep these intersection encounters from turning tragic.
Investigation continues
The Benton County Sheriff's Office has not released additional details and says the crash remains under investigation, the news report adds. KNSI reported that deputies have not announced whether any charges will be filed as investigators continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
