A 41-year-old Senoia man is facing a serious felony charge after police say he nearly killed his own father in a violent attack inside a Johnson Street home. Officers who responded to the address on Tuesday found the older man unconscious and “barely alive,” according to Senoia police. The victim has since become alert and is now talking with investigators. The suspect, identified as John Honea, is charged with aggravated battery in connection with the beating.
Neighbors called for help after hearing a violent argument, and officers discovered the injured man inside, FOX 5 Atlanta reports. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Senoia Police Department as detectives work the scene and interview witnesses. Honea was arrested at the residence and booked on one count of aggravated battery, according to the station.
Police Describe A Brutal Beating
Capt. Jason Ercole did not mince words about what officers walked into. He said the victim had been “beaten severely, just horrifically beaten,” and described “contusions all over his face and head, blood in the eyes, blood in the ears.” His remarks were given on scene and captured by FOX 5 Atlanta, which also reported that Honea had recently been released from prison and arrived at his father’s home, leading to an argument over whether he could stay there. Investigators initially feared the father would not survive the assault.
Felony Charge And Possible Prison Time
Under Georgia’s aggravated battery statute, O.C.G.A. § 16-5-24, as summarized by FindLaw, the offense is a felony that can bring one to 20 years in prison. The law covers malicious acts that deprive someone of a body part, make a body part useless, or seriously disfigure a victim, and it allows for stiffer penalties and fines in certain situations, including cases involving elderly victims or public-safety officers. Prosecutors in Coweta County will review the Senoia case and decide whether to seek additional charges or family-violence enhancements as evidence is collected.
What Happens Next
Senoia police say the investigation is still active, with detectives continuing to interview witnesses and process physical evidence as the GBI assists. Authorities have not said whether Honea has been given a bond or when he will first appear in court. Those decisions will be handled by prosecutors and the county court system. Officials said anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Senoia Police Department.
