An early morning last Saturday chaos call on West Taylor Street ended with a local man in handcuffs and at least one Sherman officer injured, according to authorities.
Sherman police say 32-year-old Ashraf Abukhalaf was detained at the scene by citizens before officers arrived. He was then arrested and booked into the Grayson County Jail, where he remains in custody pending the case moving forward.
Officers were dispatched to a home in the 1300 block of W. Taylor Street around 2:00 a.m. on a report of a burglary of a habitation, as reported by MyTexasDaily. According to that outlet, Abukhalaf resisted arrest, assaulted an officer, and allegedly threatened to kill one of the responders.
The report states that he faces multiple counts, including burglary of a habitation, evading arrest or detention, resisting arrest, search or transport, assault on a public servant, and obstruction or retaliation. He is being held on a $105,000 bond, according to the same report.
Abukhalaf was booked into the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, the county detention facility operated by the Grayson County Sheriff's Office at 200 S. Crockett Street. The sheriff's office maintains custody and booking records for inmates there. Prosecutors with the Grayson County District Attorney's Office will decide whether to seek formal indictments as the case proceeds.
What the charges mean
Under Texas law, burglary of a habitation is a serious offense and is often charged as a felony, with potential penalties that can vary depending on the specific circumstances. For the statute that defines burglary, see Justia.
Assault against a public servant is addressed in Texas Penal Code §22.01, and resisting or obstructing an officer is covered in Chapter 38. Those sections increase potential penalties when the alleged victim is a law enforcement officer. For the statutory language, consult the Texas Legislature and Justia.
Sherman police activity this year
The arrest lands in the middle of a run of property crime enforcement in Sherman. In March, the department reported recovering more than $100,000 in allegedly stolen goods during a separate arrest. Local reporting from KXII indicates the department has emphasized theft and burglary investigations in recent months.
Anyone with information about last Saturday's incident is asked to contact the Sherman Police Department at (903) 892-7290 or submit a tip through the department's website. Sherman Police Department records and local court filings will shape the next steps in the case. As always, an arrest is an allegation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
