A shots-fired call at the busy junction where State Road 836 meets I-95 and I-395 brought eastbound traffic to a halt Friday morning, as police shut down lanes on the Dolphin Expressway and rush-hour drivers crept through the Midtown interchange.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers and City of Miami Police officers responded to the report and blocked off lanes while they worked the scene and routed cars around the area, according to WSVN. The closures quickly triggered heavy delays for eastbound commuters.
"Troopers have isolated a vehicle that is parked against the barrier of the highway," WSVN reported. The car's windows were covered with a tarp and the vehicle showed visible front-end damage. Aerial 7Skyforce video showed eastbound backups stretching as far west as Northwest 27th Avenue while investigators processed the scene.
Construction And Chokepoints Magnify Delays
The Midtown interchange is already a notorious congestion point in the middle of the long-term I-395/SR 836/I-95 design-build project, which has brought lane shifts and periodic closures that squeeze options for eastbound traffic. Frequent lane changes and detours mean incidents like this can quickly ripple across the network, according to the I-395/SR 836/I-95 project site.
What Drivers Should Do
Drivers headed toward downtown were advised to brace for heavy eastbound slowdowns on SR 836 and to consider bailing out earlier for exits or surface streets until all lanes reopen. Coverage of the ongoing construction has noted that the work limits alternate routes during incidents, so travelers are urged to lean on live traffic reports and official project advisories, according to Local 10.
As of Friday evening, officials had not released any information about injuries or arrests, and the investigation was still active. Residual delays were expected in the area, and drivers were encouraged to check official traffic feeds for the latest routing updates.
