Norman’s gymnastics powerhouse just got a serious upgrade.
The University of Oklahoma on Friday unveiled roughly $15 million in renovations at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center, expanding the training, recovery and team spaces used by OU’s men’s and women’s gymnastics programs. The project adds about 16,000 square feet of new space, including new team suites, locker rooms and lounges built to keep athletes on campus between practice and classes. The building, which opened in 1982, remains the training home and display case for much of Oklahoma’s gymnastics hardware.
What the University Says
University athletics officials describe the work as a $15.9 million renovation completed this spring that included a 16,050-square-foot addition, a new entry lobby with a trophy display, dedicated team suites and expanded sports-medicine and performance spaces, according to University of Oklahoma Athletics. The athletics page also notes that the Sam Viersen Center has been the training home to 20 national championship teams.
Local Reporting and What’s on the Ground
Local station KOCO reported the makeover as a more-than-$15 million project and described the addition as roughly 16,000 square feet with new locker rooms, lounges and team suites. Officials said the layout is meant to keep athletes close to training, recovery and study spaces, as reported by KOCO.
Planning Files and Budgets
University planning pages list the approved scope as construction of an approximately 15,734-square-foot addition and renovation of about 2,146 square feet, and a Board of Regents agenda includes an estimated project budget of $15.9 million, per OU Operations and the OU Board of Regents. That mix of early planning numbers and final accounting is typical for campus projects as design and scope get refined during construction.
Coaches on the New Spaces
"The lounge is my favorite part," women’s coach K. J. Kindler told The Journal Record, saying the dedicated hangout areas help team chemistry and give recruits an immediate look at Oklahoma’s championship hardware. Coaches and staff have also emphasized the sports-medicine and performance areas as daily-use upgrades for recovery and strength work.
Where It Sits and Who Built It
The Sam Viersen Center sits on OU’s south campus at 325 W. Imhoff Rd., with campus safety materials listing the building and its locker-room details, per OU Campus Safety. Construction management and design listings from Timberlake Construction and architect Bockus Payne describe performance rooms, hydrotherapy areas and team suites among the project components.
For Norman and Sooner fans, the overhaul is both a practical quality-of-life boost for student‑athletes and a visible recruiting showcase wrapped around OU’s string of championships. The refreshed Sam Viersen Center is the latest in a broader wave of athletics facility investments on campus as programs lean into upgraded training environments.
