South End is about to get a bank that looks a lot more like your favorite coffee spot than a buttoned-up branch. Capital One has filed sketch plans with the city for a one-story, roughly 10,463-square-foot Capital One Café at 1520 S. Tryon Street, the former Elder Gallery site. The concept pairs a full-service coffee bar with an outdoor patio, walk-up ATM and low-pressure banking so that a quick caffeine run can double as a financial check-in.

Sketch plan shows ATM, parking and bike lockers

The sketch submitted this week outlines a walk-up ATM near the entrance, patio seating, bike lockers and electric vehicle parking spread across about 20 spaces, all within a single-story brick building, according to the Charlotte Observer. The outlet also notes the property last changed hands in 2023, when OMS PFG LLC paid nearly $8.5 million for the site. That LLC is tied to Charlotte real-estate firm OmShera Holdings.

What to expect inside the café

Capital One Cafés are designed as hybrid hangouts where banking sits quietly in the background. Inside, customers can expect a full-service coffee bar operated with Verve Coffee Roasters, free Wi-Fi, an in-store ATM, an all-day food menu and reservable semi-private nooks and community rooms, per Capital One. The company also says eligible Capital One debit and credit cardholders can score 50% off handcrafted beverages, and account holders can book those nooks through the Capital One app.

Airport lounge points to a bigger play

The South End café is not a one-off. It follows Capital One's move to beef up its brick-and-mortar footprint in Charlotte, including plans for a roughly 14,000-square-foot lounge on the mezzanine of Concourse A at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, featuring regionally inspired menus, airfield views and dedicated workspaces, the Charlotte Observer reports. At about 14,000 square feet, the planned lounge would rank among the largest in Capital One's network, according to industry coverage, and outlets such as Business Traveller and Axios have outlined additional details and timing expectations.

Why South End makes sense

With its steady stream of office workers, shoppers and light-rail riders, South End has become a natural landing spot for hospitality concepts, and Capital One has been quietly growing its Café lineup across the Southeast. The company opened its first North Carolina Café in April at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, coverage in The News & Observer shows. On the real-estate side, OmShera's own site lists a South End property in its holdings, and OmShera Holdings describes itself as a local commercial real-estate operator active in Charlotte, signaling clear interest in the neighborhood's continued growth.

For now, what Capital One has on file with the city is a sketch plan, not a final permit, so construction and opening timelines will depend on approvals and leasing arrangements. Even so, the filing makes one thing clear: the bank is betting that Charlotte is ready for another spot where laptop work, latte runs and financial to-do lists all live under the same roof.
