A 28-year-old woman is recovering in stable condition after police say she was stabbed twice during a confrontation in Southfield, then crashed her SUV into a metal gate outside the Oxley Apartments on Providence Drive. She underwent surgery following the assault and is expected to recover. A 24-year-old woman has been taken into custody in connection with the attack.
Police say fight over children's father turned violent
Investigators say the two women, who both have children with the same man, drove separately to a nearby residence, where tensions that had been simmering spilled over into a physical fight. At some point during the confrontation, the 28-year-old was stabbed.
Police say she tried to escape in a Chevrolet Equinox but did not get far. The SUV struck a tree, the airbags deployed, and the vehicle kept going until it slammed into a metal gate outside the Oxley complex. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the assault happened on Providence Drive right outside the apartments.
Police message and arrests
Deputy Chief Aaron Huguley told FOX 2 Detroit that authorities want people to think before they let personal disputes spiral.
"We want people to use their conflict resolution skills," Huguley said, adding that detectives are still piecing together how the argument escalated so quickly.
The station reports the 24-year-old suspect traveled to a home in Detroit before officers took her into custody, and that she could be arraigned as soon as Friday. Police have not released the names of either woman while prosecutors review potential charges.
Hospital update and charging process
Local station ClickOnDetroit reported the stabbing occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Greenfield and Nine Mile Road. The victim was taken to a hospital, where she was listed as expected to be okay.
Officers have said a suspect is in custody, and once the investigation is wrapped up, the case will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review. Police are asking anyone with information, including home surveillance or cellphone video, to contact Southfield detectives.
Apartment complex has drawn attention this year
The Oxley Apartments complex, which lists a Cumberland Road mailing address, has already had a rough year. It was the scene of a January fire that displaced more than 20 residents. C&G Newspapers reported the Jan. 29 blaze at 23105 Providence Drive and said firefighters from neighboring communities assisted at the scene.
As of late yesterday afternoon, building management had not issued a public statement about the stabbing or the crash outside the gate.
