A 23-year-old St. Louis County man is being held on a hefty bond after prosecutors charged him with a string of sexual-assault felonies tied to at least three alleged attacks in April and early May. The suspect, identified in court records as Lorenzo Gaines, remains in custody as detectives ask anyone else who believes they were targeted to step forward.
According to KMOV, Gaines faces four counts of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and one count of first-degree sodomy. A probable cause statement cited by the station names three women and says the alleged assaults occurred between April 9 and May 1. Court records show he is being held on $750,000 bond, with a bond-reduction hearing set for May 11 and a preliminary hearing on May 26.
Police Seek Other Victims
“Investigators urged any additional victims to contact the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons at 314-615-5400,” KMOV reported. Detectives say the case remains very much active as they work with prosecutors on the charging documents and continue following up on leads.
Where Police Say the Assaults Occurred
The probable cause statement identifies an apartment on Oxford Hills Drive, near North Lindbergh Boulevard, as the location where the victims were taken, details that surfaced as detectives appealed for more witnesses and information. The St. Louis County Police Bureau of Crimes Against Persons, which handles major sexual-assault investigations and has in recent weeks pursued cold cases and encouraged tips from the community, coordinates with the county prosecutor’s office as cases move toward formal charges, according to RiverBender.
Legal Snapshot
Under Missouri law, first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy are among the state’s most serious sexual-offense felonies and can carry prison terms ranging from at least five years up to life imprisonment depending on aggravating circumstances, according to the Revisor of Statutes of Missouri. As with any criminal case, Gaines is presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
Gaines remained held at the county justice center as his court dates approach. The charges are accusations that must be tested in the courtroom, and this story will be updated as additional police releases or court filings shed more light on the case.
