San Francisco woke up today, to a shallow marine layer and low 50s, but the gray start is not sticking around for long. As the low clouds thin by late morning, a warm, sunny afternoon should push highs into the upper 60s to around 70°F across much of the city. Expect a familiar split personality kind of day, with cooler coastal pockets and noticeably warmer inland neighborhoods.
Foggy Mornings, Sunny Afternoons
The marine deck is set to erode through the morning hours, clearing the way for mostly sunny skies by midday across most neighborhoods. Near the coast, spots like Ocean Beach and the Embarcadero will hang onto that cool, ocean-influenced air, while areas just a few miles inland warm up more quickly under the afternoon sun.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
By afternoon, southwest to west winds will start flexing a bit, with sustained speeds in the teens and gusts up to about 26 mph in exposed areas, including hilltops and bridge approaches. Cyclists, open-deck ferry riders and anyone staking out a sidewalk table should be ready for some extra-blustery conditions from late afternoon into Monday night. The National Weather Service expects breezy weather to linger into the evening.
East Bay Heat Risk
Across the bay, the interior East Bay valleys are poised to be the hot spots, with the warmest readings of the day and a moderate risk of heat-related illness for sensitive groups. In the warmest pockets, highs could climb into the 80s. Older adults, infants and people without air conditioning should keep the water bottle close, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the peak afternoon heat and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces. For cooling locations and detailed heat safety guidance, check the SF Department of Public Health.
Marine Watches and Small Craft Advisories
Out on the water, small craft advisories remain in effect for parts of the nearshore and outer waters through today and into Tuesday, with seas of roughly 4–5 feet and locally gusty offshore winds. Boaters should plan for choppier conditions, keep tabs on any advisories from local authorities and be prepared for the possibility of bumpier and occasionally delayed ferry rides.
Looking Ahead
Temperatures slide back toward seasonal levels by midweek as a trough approaches, bringing a slight chance of light rain from late Tuesday night into Wednesday for parts of the North Bay and the peninsula. After that, dry and milder weather looks to settle back in, with afternoon highs near 70°F again by Thursday and Friday.
