Minneapolis is getting a classic spring Sunday on May 3, 2026, with clear skies, a mild start in the mid-50s, and afternoon highs near 70°F. It will feel comfortable, but the dry northwest breeze will quietly crank up the fire risk west of the metro.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Northwest winds will strengthen from late morning into the afternoon, generally 10-15 mph with frequent gusts of 20-25 mph and locally higher gusts near the western suburbs of the metro. The National Weather Service Twin Cities has issued a special weather statement for elevated fire weather across western Minnesota, with relative humidity expected to drop into the 20s during the afternoon.
That combo of dry air and gusty winds can help even small flames spread. Officials are urging people to skip open burning today and be extra cautious with grills, yard debris, fire pits, or any outdoor flames during the peak afternoon hours.
What To Expect For Your Plans
In the core of the city, conditions stay dry and pleasant, a solid day for errands, patios, dog walks, and outdoor workouts. There are no active watches or warnings for the metro itself, but rural and western counties could see fires spread quickly if one starts.
If you are headed west of town, keep an eye on any activity that involves sparks or flame. Around home, secure loose patio furniture before the stronger gusts arrive and hold off on debris burns until drier, calmer conditions return.
Monday And The Week Ahead
On Monday a cold front sweeps through, bringing another round of gusty west-to-northwest winds. Forecasters expect gusts up to 30-35 mph across western Minnesota, with breezy conditions reaching into the metro.
A few light showers may pop up along the front, mainly in western Wisconsin, and cooler air settles in behind it. Highs drop into the 50s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Later in the week, overnight lows could slip to near or below freezing in some outlying spots, so gardeners will want to keep a close watch on the forecast and be ready to protect sensitive plants.
We wrote earlier this week about the turn from frost to spring warmth, which set the stage for this weekend warm-up. We will update readers if any new watches or warnings are issued.
