As the sun slipped toward the horizon Thursday night, waves rolled in quietly at the Boynton Beach Inlet while dozens of people stood in near silence. They had come to remember Lanessa Rodriguez-Vega, a 35-year-old manager who was shot and killed while working at a Fort Pierce pawn shop last week. Candles flickered beside photos and flowers, a small glow against the water as friends and family walked together to watch the sunset in her honor.

The vigil, organized by longtime friend Nayomy Nomelin, was part memorial, part reunion for people who knew Lanessa from work, nightlife and everyday life in Palm Beach County. Nomelin urged everyone to lean on one another, to remember Lanessa's energy and to pray together as the crowd passed around memories between stretches of quiet. "Long live Lanessa. We love you, girl," Angela Gutierrez told the group, according to WPBF. After the speaking and prayers wrapped up, the group walked down to the sand and watched the sun disappear below the waterline.

What Police Say Happened Inside the Shop

According to investigators, the violence unfolded miles north in Fort Pierce. Police say officers were called at about 7:12 p.m. on April 28 to the We Buy Gold and Silver shop at 4603 S. U.S. Highway 1, where the manager was found shot and later pronounced dead at the scene, WQCS reports. Detectives say two men had gone into the store and then fled, and police have said they still do not know what motivated the shooting.

One Suspect Arrested After Deadly Shooting

The next day, officers focused on a suspect they say was linked to the deadly encounter. A 20-year-old Vero Beach man, Landen Julian Ballard, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He is being held at the St. Lucie County Jail, authorities said, according to WPTV. Investigators say they traced Ballard's route from Interstate 95 and recovered a discarded handgun and magazine along the way.

Surveillance Footage and Affidavit Paint Grim Picture

An arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime says store surveillance video shows Ballard and another man entering the business, then Ballard pulling a gun and firing several rounds. The affidavit also says Ballard later asked people around him, "Is it bad that I have no remorse?" A witness told investigators that Ballard threw the weapon away while they drove off and bragged that he had "finished his clip," according to the document.

Second Man in Custody as Person of Interest

Days later, a second name surfaced in the case. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tylen Jerome Ryan on May 5 on a tampering-with-evidence charge after the U.S. Marshals Task Force took him into custody in Indian River County. Law enforcement has described him as a person of interest in the investigation, WPTV reports. Police say the case remains very much active and that more charges could still be filed.

Community, Identity and Support in the Aftermath

Friends say Lanessa, who lived in Palm Beach County and worked at the Fort Pierce shop, was a familiar face in local nightlife and was known for her warmth and what one friend described as an "electric" personality. Police records cited by some outlets identify the victim under a different name, Lazaro Rodriguez Vega. Friends and organizers say that reflects a legal name, not the name she used in daily life, according to Law&Crime. In Lake Worth, the organization Compass is offering grief counseling to anyone affected by the killing, WPBF notes.

Where the Case Stands Now

Ballard remains behind bars on murder and tampering charges, and prosecutors have not yet set a trial date. Investigators continue to urge anyone with information to contact Fort Pierce police or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers as they follow up on leads, according to WQCS. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are still on the table.
