Carson Beach in South Boston turned from spring hangout to police scene Tuesday evening, as state troopers and Boston police shut down parking lots and a stretch of Day Boulevard after multiple fights broke out among large groups along the waterfront. Officers swept through the beach and nearby areas to disperse the crowds and secure the shoreline while warm weather had drawn in beachgoers. Crews stayed on through the evening to clear the scene and get traffic moving again.
Massachusetts State Police said troopers first arrived at Carson Beach at about 5:30 p.m. after getting calls about fights, loud music and alcohol use, according to a statement reported by Boston.com. With large groups already gathered along the waterfront, officers shut down the Carson Beach parking lots and told people to clear out.
Police described “crowds of youth” being dispersed from both Carson Beach and nearby Castle Island and said they did not have an exact count of how many people were there or how many were ordered to leave, per Boston.com. The area was cleared by roughly 9:30 p.m., and authorities reported no injuries. As of late Tuesday night, police said there had been no arrests.
Parking and Day Boulevard Closures
The disturbances led to hours-long closures of Carson Beach’s north and south parking lots and part of Day Boulevard, which was later reopened, according to The Boston Globe. Boston police provided backup to state troopers while crews worked the scene and restored normal operations along the busy shoreline.
Past Incidents, Local Context
Carson Beach has seen volatile warm-weather crowds before. In May 2024, a fight involving roughly 100 people left a man stabbed and drew a heavy police response, as detailed in Hoodline’s coverage of a man stabbed amid large brawl. That recent history has kept public safety officials alert as temperatures climb and beach season ramps up.
Officials reiterated that there were no reported injuries or arrests tied to Tuesday’s disturbances and said patrols will continue to keep an eye on the waterfront as warm weather brings more people to the beaches, according to The Boston Globe. The Carson Beach parking lots and Day Boulevard were reopened after crews declared the area clear.
