Michigan City police are searching for whoever shot and killed 14-year-old Devin Porter on Friday afternoon, leaving a family reeling and a neighborhood on edge.
Officers were called around 4:30 p.m. to a home in the 300 block of West 11th Street, where they found Porter inside. He was taken to Franciscan Health, Michigan City, and later died.
What Police Say
Detectives are interviewing witnesses, combing the area for surveillance footage, and working to identify suspects, according to CBS Chicago. The outlet reported that investigators were still on the case Monday, following up on tips and reviewing evidence as they tried to piece together what happened.
Family Demands Answers
Porter’s relatives say the teen was an honor-roll freshman who loved basketball and was simply trying to go outside and play before he was killed, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. His mother told the station that their last conversation was about him heading out to play. His sister said the shooting unfolded in daylight, and that Porter ran back into the house and collapsed while younger siblings hid nearby.
How To Help Investigators
Police are urging anyone who saw anything or has video from the area to contact Michigan City detectives Kay Pliske or Brock Moore. Fox 32 Chicago published phone numbers and email addresses for both investigators. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 800-342-STOP or online at michianacrimestoppers.com, the station noted.
Local Fallout
Porter’s family members say they are now afraid to return to the house, pointing to what they describe as a rise in recent shootings. Police told ABC7 Chicago that another juvenile was wounded the day before in a shooting about half a mile away. No arrests have been announced, and authorities continue to appeal for witnesses and footage as the investigation moves forward, according to CBS Chicago.
